How to Hire Offshore Developers in India

The three hiring models, what to check before you sign anything, how a working week actually runs across time zones, and the warning signs worth walking away from.

Start here

The decision that matters is not where, it is how

Offshore development fails for the same reasons local projects fail: unclear scope, no visibility, and nobody senior paying attention. Distance does not cause those problems, but it does make them easier to hide for longer.

So most of this guide is about working practice rather than geography. Get the practice right and the location becomes a detail.

Models

Three ways to buy development work

Model
Best for
What you manage
Main risk
Freelancers
Small, well-defined pieces of work
Everything: scope, review, integration, continuity
Availability disappears without notice, and nobody else knows the code
Dedicated team
An ongoing roadmap with changing priorities
Priorities; the supplier manages delivery
Paying for a team that is not kept busy with clear direction
Fixed-scope project
A defined outcome you can describe in writing
Approval at each stage
Change requests, if the scope was vague at the start
Due diligence

What to check before you sign

01
Who actually does the workAsk for the names and the experience of the people on your project, not the company's headcount.
02
Where the code livesIt should be in your repository from the first commit, not handed over at the end.
03
How you will see progressA staging link you can open on any day beats a weekly status email every time.
04
The overlap in working hoursThree to four hours of shared time is enough. Zero overlap turns every question into a day.
05
Who owns the IPAssignment in writing, covering code, designs and anything generated during the project.
06
What happens if you leaveAsk directly. A supplier confident in the relationship will document and hand over without friction.
07
Testing and review practiceCode review, a staging environment and a test plan — or you are the testing team.
08
How change is handledChanges are normal. The question is whether they are quoted in writing or absorbed and resented.
In practice

How a working week runs

This is the rhythm that makes distance a non-issue.

Monday

Priorities for the week agreed in the overlap hour, written down where both sides can see them.

Tuesday

Build. Questions raised during your working day are answered in it, not the next one.

Wednesday

Mid-week check on the staging link, so a misunderstanding costs hours instead of a sprint.

Thursday

Testing and fixes on staging, with a written list of what is done and what moved.

Friday

Demo of what works, decisions for next week, and anything unfinished carried over openly.

Warning signs

Reasons to walk away

A quote with no questionsAnyone who can price your project from one paragraph is either guessing or pricing a change-request business.
No access to the codeIf the repository stays on their side until final payment, you are not buying software, you are renting it.
Demos that are only slidesScreenshots and presentations in place of a running staging link usually mean there is less built than claimed.
The team keeps changingRotating developers is how knowledge leaks out of a project and timelines quietly double.
Everything is possibleA supplier who never pushes back on a bad idea is not protecting your budget.
Testing is your jobIf quality assurance is not in the plan, you will be the one finding the bugs, in production.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why does this page not list rates?

Because a rate without context tells you nothing about the cost of the outcome. A cheaper rate that takes three times as long is not cheaper. We quote the work, not the hour.

How much overlap do we really need?

Three to four hours a day covers daily questions, reviews and decisions. Our afternoon covers US mornings, which is usually enough without anyone working nights.

Should we start with a trial project?

Yes. One narrow, useful piece of work tells you more about how a supplier operates than any reference call.

What about NDAs and data protection?

Signed before anything sensitive is shared. Where a project involves personal or regulated data, the handling rules are agreed in writing before work starts.

Can you work inside our existing team?

Yes — in your repository, your tools and your release process, to your standards rather than ours.

Tell us what you need built

Send us a short note about the work. We will tell you what it involves, what we would start with, and how long it takes — before you commit to anything.

Only the starred fields are needed. We reply within one working day.
